The Bee as a Symbol of Natures Innocence in Emersons The Humble-Bee and Whittiers unveil the Bees The English custom of telling the bees when there was a closing in the family, and of covering the hives with black cloth to muck up them from leaving is what Whittiers song, Telling the Bees refers to. This same custom, or at least the same attitude towards this creature no doubt delight Emersons poem, The Humble-Bee. While Whittiers poem speaks of the custom itself, both poets treat the bee as a symbol of the honour of the cycles of character. If William Blake was correct in describing ingenuousness as the opposite of experience, then the bumblebee is inherently sinless as a result of its lack of human experience.
